Above is a detailed outline of how I would set up my future classroom. The structure of the classroom is important because as a teacher you want to create a safe and comfortable community. A positive atmosphere will create for a better learning environment. The door is not placed in this layout, but will be placed next to the clothes stand.
SMARTboard: placed in the front of the classroom. The SMARTboard is used to engage and interact students throughout lessons daily. SMARTboards will allow students to interact throughout the lesson and allow the teacher to provide information on it. Square carpet: placed in front of the SMARTboard because this allows the students can easily see it and come together during instruction, especially morning meeting. Teacher desk: placed to the left of the SMARTboard and rug because during instruction with the SMARTboard or in front of the class, the teacher will have easy access to quickly grab something. In this area is where lessons will be mainly taught, having the teachers desk in this area will allow easy access not only for the teacher but students. Storage: placed next to the teacher desk because it gives the teacher his/her own space for resources such as textbooks, guides and tools that are implemented in the lessons. Shelves: placed to the right of the SMARTboard. These shelves will have student information placed in a organized form. This is for the teacher and student purposes. These shelves can hold such tools: homework cubbies, extra worksheets, bins for specific homework turn ins, etc. Above these shelves will be a schedule of events throughout the day, this way when the students first walk in they will put their handed in homework and folder in their assigned cubby and look and see above the schedule of what they will be doing today. Student Tables: students are placed at tables because it gives the students an opportunity to develop socialization skills. They will develop socialization skills because the tables allow students to collaborate with one another using teamwork (group activities) which will build a positive classroom community. The chairs are arranged for the students to have access to the front where the SMARTboard is located and teacher during instruction. The tables are placed this way for the students: -To see the SMARTboard from their desk -Placed in the center so they have easy access to all materials in the classroom -Allows easy movement for the teacher to each student's seat -Allows the teacher to see the students from his/her desk Kidney Table: placed in the left corner because it gives the students space and less distractions in order for them to concentrate. The kidney table will be used during guided instruction such as guided reading with a small group of students, working with a small group, or one on one work. Teacher will support the students by sitting in front to interact with the students while they sit around the table interacting with each other as well. Computers: placed in the back of the classroom for students to use during station teaching, research and free time (when they first walk in). Circle Carpet: placed in the right hand corner for students to focus during reading time and stations. This area provides a comfortable place for the students to come relax and read, or for students who need a break and sit. There are shelves and book stands that will be filled with books for the student. This will also include their reading folders for station use. Bean bag chairs are placed around the carpet for the students to feel comfortable and focus more while they are reading. This sections offers a relax nature for the students. Clothes Stand and Sink:placed near the front door because this will be the first place students pass when they walk in the classroom and will be allowed to place their backpacks, jackets and personal belongings in their assigned stand. The sink could potentially be used during lessons, or for students to wash their hands.
Below are displays that I will place around my classroom for student management and success in the classroom. Displays such as word wall, student work, daily schedule, student jobs, birthdays, etc. What is placed around the walls will motivate students throughout the year.
